For many, the prospect of a trip to the dentist incites a sense of nervousness. Whether it’s stress brought on by the sounds and smells of the dental clinic, a fear of oral injections or a general feel of unease at the sight of dental instruments, sedation dentistry could be the answer.
Commonly referred to as ‘sleep dentistry’, treatment accompanied by a mild sedative is a safe way to reduce the stress often associated with dental procedures. Here at The Smile Office, our aim is to always make your dental experience as relaxed and stress-free as possible – as such, we offer clients the option of mild sedation.
It is important to note that we are a certified Dental Board Sedation practice. This means that we can offer intravenous sedation on a daily basis – rather than bringing in an anaesthetist or dental seditionist on a monthly basis like most other practices.
We offer patients the choice of two main sedative options; these are suited to adults and children alike.
Happy gas, which is a combination of nitrous oxide and pure oxygen, is a mild sedative that is suitable for those who find that a dental visit often results in mild to moderate levels of anxiety. Needle-free, this option involves the placement of a small nasal inhaler over the nose. Patients remain conscious, however most find that this gas is enough to ensure they remain completely relaxed throughout the duration of the procedure.
Intravenous sedation is suited to those who experience higher levels of anxiety or are required to undergo lengthier procedures. While patients remain conscious, intravenous sedation ensures they are completely calm and relaxed with very little awareness of what is going on. This option also helps substantially with pain relief.
If you’re avoiding a trip to the dentist due to anxiety, sleep dentistry could be the answer. The Smile Office provides a number of safe sedation options that are suited to both children and adults, helping to ensure your dentist visit is relaxed and hassle-free.
